March Song of the Month

It's March and time for new songs this month! Ask you child what they've been singing in music class!
 
Kindergarten: Best Friends Foreve
We all have a best friend, now let's sing about them! 

1st Grade: All Stars 
Students are learning this song for their musical, It's a Hit, on April 6th. 

2nd Grade: Three Blind Mice
This is a traditional song that students will learn to sing many different ways. 

3rd Grade: Rattlin' Bog
It's St. Patrick's Day this month, and in honor of it, we will sing this Irish tune! 

4th Grade: Night Herding Song 
We are learning this song as part of our spring musical, Bubba the Cowboy Prince. We will be performing our musical on 3/9. 

5th Grade: Take Time in Life  
This is a Liberian folk song. Students will learn instrument parts to accompany this song. 

February Song of the Month

In honor of African American history month, students will be learning songs to celebrate! 
 
Kindergarten: Peace Like a River 
This is a simple beautiful spiritual that all kindergarteners can sing!

1st Grade: Get on Board  
Students are learning this song and studying what the genre "spiritual" means. 

2nd Grade: Kye Kye Kule 
This song/game is traditional to Ghana. While playing this came, students will continue to practice singing individually. 

3rd Grade: Follow the Drinking Gourd 
This song relates to the history of the Underground Railroad. Ask your child who Peg Leg Joe is!

4th Grade: Happy Trails 
We are learning this song as part of our spring musical, Bubba the Cowboy Prince. We will be performing our musical on 3/9. 

5th Grade: Take Time in Life  
This is a Liberian folk song. Students will learn the instrument parts to accompany this song. 

January Song of the Month

Kindergarten: Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star
Students are learning how to create their own movements to the song. We have also read the book if this song. 

1st Grade: This Little Light of Mine 
Students are learning how to add instruments into the song. Students are practicing keeping the steady beat and playing rhythms on instruments while they sing this song. 

2nd Grade: I've Been Working on the Railroad 
We are studying the history of trains while we learn this song. Students are creating their own movements to match the song.

3rd Grade: When the Saints Go Marching In 
Students are learning this gosepl song as they study Martin Luther King Jr. Students are also being introduced to 16th notes though this song. 

4th Grade: Wide Open Spaces 
We are learning this song as part of our spring musical, Bubba the Cowboy Prince. We will be performing our musical on 3/9. 

5th Grade: Frere Jacques 
Students are learning to sing this song in canon with instrument accompaniment. 

December Song of the Month

Kindergarten: Jingle Bells 
  • A holiday classic! We are learning how to keep the steady beat to Jingle Bells. 
1st Grade: Up on the Housetop
  • Students are learning how to add instruments into the song to make it more colorful! 
2nd Grade: The Nutcracker
  • We are studying this wonderful ballet by Tchaikovsky. Students are learning about ballet and the important pieces of music from this ballet. 
3rd Grade: Dancing Snowflakes 
  • We are learning this song as part of our December concert on 12/8. 
4th Grade: Winter Wonderland 
  • We are learning this winter classic. Do you know who Parson Brown is? 
5th Grade: 12 Days of Christmas 


November Song of the Month

It's time for November's "Song of the Month". Ask your child to sing it to you! 
 
Kindergarten: London Bridge
  • A children's classic. Students are learning the history of the London Bridge as well. 
1st Grade: Over the River and Through the Woods 
  • This song is a great song to celebrate Thanksgiving! 
2nd Grade: LOL!  
  • We are learning this song as part of our November concert on 11/10. 
3rd Grade: Snowflake, Snowflake 
  • We are learning this song as part of our December concert on 12/8. 
4th Grade: This Land is Your Land 
  • This song by Woodie Guthrie celebrates all things great about the United States. 
5th Grade: The Eyes of Texas 
  • It's football season! It's time to learn the fight song of UT! 

October Song of the Month

It's time for October's "Song of the Month". Ask your child to sing you October's song of the month! 
 
Kindergarten: Ghost of John
  • A perfect song for this time of year! In this song we explore how to use our voice through spooky sounds! 
1st Grade: She'll Be Comin' 'Round the Mountain 
  • A wonderful folk song that every student should know. 
2nd Grade: Dancing All Day 
  • We are learning this song as part of our November concert on 11/10. 
3rd Grade: Winter Again
  • We are learning this song as part of our December concert on 12/8. 
4th Grade: Dem Bones 
  • This song is an African American spiritual, perfect to sing during this time of year! 
5th Grade: Skin and Bones 
  • This is a traditional song. We will be learning how to play different instruments parts together while learning this song. 

September Song of the Month

Welcome back, Panthers! It's time for September's "Song of the Month". Every month there will be one song that your child will be focusing on  every music class. Ask your child to sing you September's song of the month! 
 
Kindergarten: There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly 
  • We are studying this classic children's song through reading the book as well as different versions of the song. 
1st Grade: America (My Country 'Tis of Thee) 
  • We are learning this patriot song to celebrate our country. 
2nd Grade: Just for Fun
  • We are learning this song as part of our November concert on 11/10. 
3rd Grade: America the Beautiful 
  • We are learning this patriot song to celebrate our country. 
4th Grade: Texas, Our Texas
  • We are learning this song as in introduction to our Texas heritage. 
5th Grade: The Star-Spangled Banner 
  • We are learning this song because September is the anniversary of the creation of The Star-Spangled Banner. 

April Song of the Month

Happy April! We have a ton of new songs we are studying this month! 
 
Kindergarten: Apples and Bananas
  • With our performance and art night coming up, we are working on our concert music. This is one of the songs that we'll be doing on the concert. 
1st Grade: Firefly
  • This song is one of the songs that 1st grade will be singing in their Bugz musical on April 14th.  
2nd Grade: Over in the Meadow
  • This is a traditional folk song about the different animals you find in a variety of habitats. 
3rd Grade: Old Joe Clark
  • This is a traditional folk song from the Appalachian region.  
4th Grade: Simple Gifts
  • This is a shaker song from the Appalachian region. We will perform this piece with the Austin Symphony on our field trip in May!
5th Grade: Nothing More
  • This is a song we will be singing at our 5th grade completion ceremony on the last day of school. 

March Song of the Month

Happy March! We have a ton of new songs we are studying this month! 
 
Kindergarten: Butterfly, Flutter By
  • With spring approaching, we are studying a song about butterflies!  
1st Grade: Things Change 
  • This song is one of the songs that 1st grade will be singing in their Bugz musical on April 14th.  
2nd Grade: Michael Finnegan
  • This is a traditional folk song from Ireland about a poor man named Michael Finnegan. Michael Finnegan doesn't have the best of luck. 
3rd Grade: Rattlin' Bog 
  • This is a traditional folk song from Ireland. We are learning about what a valley, bog, and the word "rattlin'" means. 
4th Grade: Funga Alafia 
  • This song is one of the songs that 4th grade will be performing in their musical on March 10th. 
5th Grade: Turn the World Around 
  • This song is all about the recorder. It lends itself nicely to improvisation on the recorder. 

February Song of the Month

February is Black History Month. All of our songs we are learning this month are to celebrate Black History Month. 
 
Kindergarten: Little Johnny Brown 
  • This is a traditional American Folk Song about a little boy named Johnny Brown. We are also learning how to play the game to go with this song. 
1st Grade: Get on Board 
  • This song is a traditional African American spiritual. We will also be learning about trains in conjunction with this song. 
2nd Grade: Kye Kye Kule 
  • This is a traditional game song from Ghana. 2nd grade is learning to play the game with the song. 
3rd Grade: Follow the Drinking Gourd  
  • We are studying about the Underground Railroad as we learn this song. Many songs were secretly taught to slaves because they gave directions that led them to freedom. 
4th Grade: Bwana Awabariki 
  • This song is one of the songs that 4th grade will be performing in their musical on March 10th. 
5th Grade: Swing Low Sweet Chariot/All Night, All Day 
  • 5th grade will be learning about partner songs. Partner songs are two songs that can be sung at the same time 

January Song of the Month

Welcome back from winter break! We have a lot of fun songs planned for this month. Ask your child what they are learning in music! 
 
Kindergarten: Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star 
  • What a great song! This month we are studying many different aspects of this song as well as other music that is related to stars. 
1st Grade: If You're Happy and You Know It 
  • 1st grade is learning how to move their bodies in many different ways while we sing this song. 
2nd Grade: I've Been Working on the Railroad 
  • This is a traditional American folk song. 2nd grade will be learning about the form of the music as well as how to create movement to the song. 
3rd Grade: When the Saints Go Marching In 
  • We are learning this song in conjunction with creative movement and learning the rhythms of the song. 
4th Grade: Did You Ever Wonder? 
  • This song is one of the songs that 4th grade will be performing in their musical on March 10th. 
5th Grade: This Little Light of Mine.
  • 5th grade is learning how to play this song on recorder. They are also composing their own music about light while learning this song. 

December Song of the Month

December is here! There's a chill in the air and the holidays are upon us! In these few weeks leading up to winter break students will be learning some wonderful holidays songs. Ask them what they are learning in music! 
 
Kindergarten: Jingle Bells
  • It's the holiday season, and we are learning all about Jingle Bells! What does bells on bobtail ring? What is a sleigh? Kindergarten will learn all of these things as we study the song. 
1st Grade: Up on the Housetop
  • Christmas is coming and so is Santa! 1st grade will not only learn this song, but learn instrument parts to play with it. 
2nd Grade: The Dreidyl Song 
  • During this holiday season, 2nd grade will learn all about Hanukkah and what a dreidyl is. 
3rd Grade: Red and Green 
  • We are learning this song because we will be singing it in our concert on December 10th. 
4th Grade: Winter Wonderland 
  • We are learning this song as part of the holiday season. It's a classic fun holiday song that everyone can sing along to!
5th Grade: Twelve Days of Christmas 
  • 5th grade will be learning about all 12 days of Christmas. What is a partridge? What is a turtle dove? By the end of the month students will be able to sing about all 12 days! 

November Song of the Month

Happy fall ya'll! It's time for November's Song of the Month! 
 
Kindergarten: London Bridge
  • We are learning about how music can go up and down. Kindergarten has been practicing making our voices go up and down and learning London Bridge because it falls down. 
1st Grade: Over the River and Through the Woods 
  • Thanksgiving is right around the corner, so off the grandmother's house we go! 
2nd Grade: Cumberland Gap 
  • 2nd grade is getting ready for their upcoming concert on November 12th. This will be one of the songs that they'll be singing. 
3rd Grade: A Holiday of Music 
  • We are learning this song because we will be singing it in our concert on December 10th. 
4th Grade: This Land is Your Land 
  • We are continuing to learn this song as part of our American Heritage. 
5th Grade: Hot Cross Buns  
  • 5th grade is learning to play recorder. Every time they learn a new song they earn a belt just like karate. Hot Cross Buns is their white belt song. 

October Song of the Month

It's time for October's "Song of the Month". Every month there will be one song that your child will be focusing on and learning every music class. Ask your child about October's songs! 
 
Kindergarten: Ghost of John
  • We are learning this song to practice exploring different sounds with out voices. 
1st Grade: Apple Tree 
  • We are learning this song to learn about one and two sounds in music. We are also learning the fun game that goes with the song as well! 
2nd Grade: Thank a Vet
  • 2nd grade is getting ready for their upcoming concert on November 12th. This will be one of the songs that they'll be singing. 
3rd Grade: Peace Unto You 
  • We are learning this song because we will be singing it in our concert in December. Students are learning instrument parts to accompany the song. 
4th Grade: This Land is Your Land 
  • We are learning this song as part of our American Heritage. 
5th Grade: Dem Bones 
  • We are learning this song because it is an American spiritual song. It will also help up remember all the bones in our body!
